Within the unofficial arts capital of the United States, Indianapolis, IN, the Percussive Arts Society is headquartered. Established in 1961, PAS is an association dealing with all matters percussion. The PAS provides resources for it members to connect with other percussionists. PAS also provides monthly newsletters writing on top percussion news, teaching tools for educators and students as well as hosting PASIC.
The Percussive Arts Society International Convention is an annual gathering for percussionists. It’s the biggest percussion event in the world. During this 4-day convention, over 120 concerts, clinics, master classes, labs, workshops and presentations are given to percussionists from all walks of life. PASIC courts to percussionists from all genres, covering orchestral percussion, drumset, marching percussion, latin percussion and various world percussion, to name a few. Lectures and presentations are given by the some of the most well-respected in the industry. This year participants will be treated to Bob Becker’s Ensemble, the Army Jazz Ensemble, Thomas Burritt, Oberlin Percussion group, Gwen Thrasher, Paul Smadbeck, Gordon Stout and many more amazing percussionists and groups.
PASIC showcases its EXPO, where hundreds of vendors supply participants with all of today’s percussion gear. Participants can try out everything including Zildjian cymbals, Black Swamp drums and accessories, Vic Firth sticks and mallets and even pick out some new music from Tapspace. Participants can seek all kinds of gear to fulfill their percussive needs. Also, many concept products are debut to the masses, showing the forward innovation and progression of percussion.
Overall, PAS is a fantastic organization for musicians, educators and event planners alike. Much of PAS duties effect the music industry and its direction, especially with PASIC. If a new line of cymbals is released from Zildjian, PASIC is sure to debut and showcase them, basically marketing out to the correct demographic at its source. With most percussive eyes on PAS and PASIC, members will be “in-the-know” in regards to everything percussion.
