Ultra Music Festival 2012

This past weekend, Bayfront Park in downtown Miami was engulfed in a sea of confetti, neon lights and endless dance music. The Ultra Music Festival, apart of Miami’s music week, featured 3-days worth of today’s top electronic music. Ultra Music Festival’s line-up boasted performers like Benny Benassi, Avicii, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Skrillex and many more.

The festival, starting out as a mere 1-day festival in 1999 that coincided with the Winter Music Conference, sold out 3 months prior and had 165,000 in attendance for the 3-day event. The festival kicked off at 4PM on Friday afternoon and, strangely, ended at 11PM Sunday evening.

While those in attendance braved the crowds and heat of the festival, viewers around the world tuned in to the Ultra Music stream presented by UTV and Google Play. The quality of the stream was fantastic and could be viewed in 1080p. During the height of the stream, over 40,000 viewers tuned in on Saturday night to see Avicii and Madonna perform on the main stage.

In my opinion, the producers of the Ultra Music Festival live stream did it right. They provided a high quality live stream at no cost to the viewer. Since not all DJs opted to be streamed, they provided a schedule of the artists that would be participating. It’s rumored that those who opted out did so because of their new set-lists and leaked material being presented to nonpaying customers.

The stream provided over 50 hours of music from the festival but was a great marketing tool for next year’s potential customers. The comment section was filled by electro-fans saying how they were planning to attend next year’s event and how they want to experience the event live for themselves.

What do you think? Would you rather attend in person, stream for free with limited line-up or pay for a full line-up?
